Pallet Rack Beams

Match pallet rack beams to your frame, load and order quantity. Compare individual beams with beam pairs, confirm dimensions, and get the right information into your quote.

Ordering Individual Beams vs. Beam Pairs

Pallet rack beams are the horizontal members spanning between upright frames. In a typical selective-rack bay, a front beam and a back beam support one storage level. Together, those two parallel beams are a beam pair; they are not joined end-to-end to make one longer beam.

The question to settle before ordering is simple: “Does this quantity mean individual beams or pairs?” A supplier may quote each beam, a pair, or a package that also includes decking. Read the unit of sale rather than assuming that the quantity column means the same thing on two quotes.

Quote wording What to confirm
Individual beam / each One horizontal beam. Confirm how many are needed for the approved layout.
Beam pair Two matching beams for one typical front-and-back level. Confirm the exact part number and quantity of pairs.
Beam pair with decking Confirm the number and dimensions of panels, included supports and hardware; do not assume the package is preassembled.

For a quantity example only, four typical two-beam levels require eight individual beams or four pairs. That count does not authorize adding four levels to existing rack. Floor storage, shared upright frames, special supports and the approved layout need to be shown separately so a purchasing count does not become an unintended design change.

Beam Length, Profile and Connector Details

Connector detail illustrates information to document; appearance alone does not confirm compatibility.

“The beams are about nine feet long” is a starting point, not a complete replacement specification. Capture the existing part number and the manufacturer’s dimensional drawing where available. Different listings and drawings can use different measurement references: record whether a dimension is an overall length, a clear opening, or a distance between specified connector faces.

Do not silently substitute one measurement for another. Include a sketch showing the endpoints used and the units. If a dimension cannot be collected safely, say it is unknown and arrange an appropriate site review; do not climb the rack or enter an affected area to get it.

  • Beam length and the exact measurement reference; beam face height and profile.
  • Step or ledge dimensions where decking or supports seat.
  • Both end connectors, pin or tab arrangement, and locking device.
  • Upright manufacturer/model, column profile and connection-hole pattern.

Lengths such as 108 or 120 inches may appear in product ranges, but neither is a universal fit. The section height, connector and rating can differ between equal-length beams. Color is useful for describing a part in a photo—not for identifying its structural specification.

Confirm Compatibility and the Rating Basis

Pallet loads stored on multi-level warehouse racking
Load shape, support and beam elevations belong in the system review; this photo is not a capacity specification.

Matching a “teardrop” description or a brand name is not enough to approve a replacement beam. Existing rack can include different product generations or prior substitutions. A connector that appears to enter a slot does not prove the assembly is suitable for the intended load.

Use the rack identification and compatibility guide to assemble labels, photos, dimensions and original records for review. Confirm the exact proposed beam/frame combination, connection and locking hardware through the manufacturer and the appropriate rack design professional before purchase or installation.

Ask what the capacity number covers. Is it a beam pair under a stated loading pattern, a deck panel, or the installed system? A pair rating is not a per-pallet allowance and is not the total capacity of every level in a bay. Do not add component ratings together or multiply a catalog figure into a system rating.

Supply the heaviest loaded pallet weight, including its pallet or container, plus its dimensions and underside/contact pattern. Concentrated feet, runners or unusual loads can behave differently from the loading pattern used for a published rating. Wire decking does not automatically turn concentrated loading into a uniformly distributed load.

RMI explains why actual load distribution matters. Its reconfiguration guidance also calls for original Load Application and Rack Configuration (LARC) drawings and licensed-engineer review of proposed beam-elevation changes. Moving beams or adding levels changes more than the purchase quantity.

Build a Complete Beam Replacement or Expansion Quote

Tell us whether you need a like-for-like replacement, additional levels, or an entirely new rack run. For replacements, separate damaged components from sound-looking parts that simply need identification. If damage is found, isolate the affected area and obtain qualified rack review; unloading, repair or replacement should follow the professional’s direction.

  • Send frame and beam identification, safe photos and existing drawings or capacity records.
  • List individual beam quantities or pair quantities explicitly, with decking and hardware on separate lines.
  • Describe loads, proposed beam elevations and whether the existing layout will change.
  • Confirm freight, receiving/unloading, installation and any engineering or permit scope in the quote.

A nonstandard length is a sourcing/design question, not permission to cut a stocked beam or move its connector. Any alteration needs manufacturer and design-professional approval for the specific system. For damaged rack, see repair and inspection; for new layouts, use pallet rack design services.

Pallet Rack Beam FAQs

Are pallet rack beams sold individually or in pairs?
Both order formats exist. Confirm the unit of sale on the specific quote or listing. A typical beam pair contains the front and back beam for one storage level; decking and hardware must be checked separately.
Can equal-length beams be used interchangeably?
Not automatically. Connector geometry, beam profile, frame compatibility and the applicable rating must all be confirmed. Use exact component records and the manufacturer/design review, not length or color alone.
Does the beam capacity apply to each pallet?
Do not assume it does. Confirm what component or assembly the published rating covers and its loading conditions. The installed system must be appropriate for the actual pallets, support arrangement and beam elevations.
Can I cut a beam to fit a narrower opening?
Do not modify a beam as an ordering shortcut. Ask about a correctly specified component; any alteration requires manufacturer and rack design-professional approval for the system.
