Industrial Shelving with Drawers: Borroughs Flexi-Bin Drawer Units
Small parts behave better in a drawer, and boxed parts read better on a divided shelf. Borroughs Flexi-Bin puts both in the same 12-inch-deep steel frame, so one run can hold drawers, dividers and open shelves together. Here is how to choose the drawer mix and when a separate drawer cabinet makes more sense.

Why Put Drawers in Industrial Shelving
Most storerooms carry two kinds of small stock. Some of it comes boxed or bagged with a label, and it is happiest standing on a shelf in its own compartment. The rest is loose: clips, O-rings, fittings, screws, connectors, small electrical parts. Loose stock on an open shelf spreads, mixes with the item next to it and ends up on the floor. A drawer keeps it contained.
Buying shelving for one kind and a separate cabinet for the other splits the same parts family across two places. Borroughs Flexi-Bin avoids that. Its drawers slide into the same 38-inch-wide, 12-inch-deep frame as its shelves and sliding dividers, so a single run can hold boxed parts above, loose parts in drawers at mid-height and heavier items on the lower shelves.

Borroughs describes Flexi-Bins as an economical way to store items ranging from electrical components, small parts, tools and hardware to literature, binders and small boxes. The shallow 12-inch shelf keeps small items in sight, and the self-locking shelves can be raised or lowered without disturbing what sits on them. Drawers add a third storage method to that same frame.
| Storage method in a Flexi-Bin run | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Drawers (04432-099) | Loose pieces, very small parts, items that roll or tangle | Contents are hidden until the drawer opens, so labels matter |
| Shelves with sliding dividers | Boxed and bagged parts with a printed part number | Loose pieces can migrate between compartments |
| Open shelves | Larger boxes, rotors, binders, kits | Small items get lost toward the back |
This page focuses on drawer storage. For the full system overview, see our main Borroughs Flexi-Bin shelving guide, which compares every configuration.
Three Ways to Get Drawers in a Flexi-Bin Run
Borroughs sells eight pre-configured Flexi-Bin units, all 38 inches wide, 12 inches deep and 84 inches tall. Two of them include drawers. Drawers are also sold as a separate component, so any frame can be fitted with them.
| Option | What Borroughs lists | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| FB107 mixed unit | 10 adjustable shelves, 43 openings, 28 three-inch and 6 six-inch sliding dividers, plus 12 drawers | A counter or issue-window unit: fast boxed movers on divided shelves, loose hardware in the drawers |
| FB108 all-drawer unit | 17 shelves holding 108 drawers, no open divided openings | Fasteners, fittings, electrical parts and other loose stock with many part numbers |
| Custom drawer run | Frames (PBF-12-84 or PBF-12-96) plus slide-in shelves (02720-099), drawers (04432-099) and drawer dividers (04436-099) ordered separately | A run sized to your exact mix, or drawers added to Flexi-Bin units you already own |

FB108: a wall of drawers. The FB108 is the unit to look at when most of what you store is loose. Borroughs fits it with 108 drawers across 17 shelves, which turns one 38-inch bay into a dense small-parts library. Optional drawer dividers split each drawer further, so a single drawer can hold several sizes of the same fitting.
FB107: the mixed unit. The FB107 puts 12 drawers into an otherwise divided unit. It suits places where the same person grabs a boxed filter and a handful of clips in one trip, such as a parts counter, a tool crib window or a maintenance issue point.
Custom runs and add-ons. Because drawers are a stand-alone component, you are not locked into the pre-configured layouts. A run might use FB108 bays at one end for hardware, FB105 or FB106 bays with three-inch dividers in the middle and open FB101 bays for bulky items. Existing Flexi-Bin frames can take drawers later. Our St. George Ford dealership case study shows a parts department that added drawers and shelves to frames it already had.
Back-to-back rows. Borroughs notes that Flexi-Bins install as stand-alone units or in back-to-back rows. A center row of drawer units, reachable from both aisles, is a common way to add drawer capacity without taking more wall.

Drawers, Sliding Dividers or Shelf Bins: Choosing by Item
The best Flexi-Bin layouts use drawers only where they earn their place. Drawers hold more small pieces in less face width, but each one costs a pull to see inside. Dividers show the part at a glance. Plastic shelf bins sit somewhere between. This is the split we use when we plan a run.
| Item | Recommended | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Screws, nuts, washers, rivets | Drawers with drawer dividers | Hundreds of loose pieces, several sizes per drawer |
| O-rings, seals, clips, retainers | Drawers | Small and easy to lose on an open shelf |
| Connectors, terminals, fuses, small electrical parts | Drawers or closely spaced 3-in. dividers | Drawers if loose, dividers if packaged |
| Boxed filters, sensors, gaskets | Shelves with sliding dividers | Part number faces out; no pull needed |
| Bagged kits with labels | Divided shelves | Bags stand in sequence and labels stay visible |
| Mixed loose and boxed items in one family | Plastic shelf bins on Flexi-Bin shelves, or a mixed FB107 | Bins move as a unit when the family is re-slotted |
| Rotors, binders, larger boxes | Open shelves on low levels | Width and weight, not compartments, are the constraint |
When dividers win. If a part arrives in its own box with a printed number, a divided shelf is faster than a drawer. The counter person reads the box from the aisle and never opens anything. Borroughs sliding dividers come in 1-1/2, 3, 4-1/2 and 6-inch heights, and the patented formed-in label holder travels with the divider when parts are rearranged.

When shelf bins win. Some departments keep plastic shelf bins on their Flexi-Bin shelves, as the existing parts room at the South Ogden Subaru dealership did before its new parts department was built. Bins hold loose pieces like a drawer but stay open at the front. They are a good middle step for items that are too loose for a divider but picked too often to bury in a drawer.
When drawers win. Anything loose, tiny or high in part count. If you find yourself planning a long row of one-inch compartments, a bank of drawers will usually hold it in less width.
Flexi-Bin Drawer Units vs Modular Drawer Cabinets
Shelving with drawers is not the only way to store small parts in drawers. Enclosed modular drawer cabinets and small-parts drawer cabinets solve related problems, and many storerooms use both. The question is which one fits each part of the room.
| Factor | Flexi-Bin shelving with drawers | Modular or small-parts drawer cabinet |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Open-front steel shelving bay with drawers, dividers and shelves mixed | Enclosed steel cabinet of drawers |
| Height | 84 or 96 in. frames; uses the full wall height | Bench, counter or eye-level heights |
| Mixing storage methods | Drawers, divided shelves and open shelves in one frame | Drawers only, sometimes with a top work surface |
| Change later | Shelves adjust on 1-1/2 in. increments; drawers and dividers can be added | Drawer heights chosen at order; interiors can often be re-divided |
| Security | Open front, fixed shelving | Enclosed; many models offer locking |
| Where it shines | Parts rooms and storerooms with long runs and thousands of numbers | Workbenches, tool cribs and single-point storage of high-value small items |
Choose Flexi-Bin drawers when the drawers are part of a larger small-parts system: a dealership parts room, a fleet shop storeroom or an electrical counter where most items sit on divided shelves and a few families need drawers. Everything shares one frame, one label system and one aisle.
Choose a drawer cabinet when the stock is concentrated at a workstation, needs a locking enclosure or must sit under a work surface. The shop row above lists Equipto, Lyon and Quantum drawer cabinets you can order online. Where Flexi-Bin Shelving with Drawers Fits
Borroughs originally designed Flexi-Bins for automotive parts departments, and the manufacturer lists auto parts stores, distribution outlets and retail operations among common users. These are the settings where we see drawers used most, with the drawer role in each.
| Setting | What goes in the drawers | Related guide |
|---|---|---|
| Dealership parts departments | Clips, retainers, bulbs, small hardware behind the counter | Parts department shelving |
| Auto parts stores | Loose hardware and small electrical near the registers | Flexi-Bin for auto parts stores |
| Fleet maintenance shops | Fittings, fuses, O-rings and fasteners for in-house repairs | Flexi-Bin for fleet shops |
| Electrical wholesalers and counters | Connectors, terminals, small fittings | Flexi-Bin for electrical wholesalers |
| Tool cribs and MRO storerooms | Spare parts, small tooling, consumables | Tool crib and MRO shelving |
| Manufacturing and assembly support | Line-side hardware and replacement components | Industrial parts shelving |
Dealerships. Parts departments combine thousands of boxed numbers with a steady stream of loose clips and fasteners. A few FB108 bays near the counter often replace the loose parts cabinets that used to sit on the floor. For the rest of the room, see Borroughs automotive shelving.
Fleets and MRO. Maintenance storerooms keep many low-count spares. Drawers suit the small loose ones, while divided shelves handle filters and boxed parts. Mixing both in one Flexi-Bin run keeps a maintenance family in one place.

Planning a Drawer Run: Height, Weight, Labels and Anchoring
- Put drawers in the comfortable zone. Drawers are pulled, looked into and pushed back, so place the busiest ones between roughly waist and shoulder height. Use the top and bottom shelves for overstock or larger boxed items.
- Respect the shelf rating. Borroughs rates each Flexi-Bin shelf at 150 lbs. Dense metal hardware adds up fast, so estimate the weight of a full drawer row and keep the heaviest families low.
- Label every drawer. A closed drawer hides its contents. Borroughs offers full-length label holders (09656-094) and blank labels (08897-099, 240 per package), and notes that Flexi-Bins used with a bar coding system help give accurate, up-to-date inventory control.
- Leave room to grow. Plan a few empty drawers and compartments per family so a new part number does not force a full re-slot.
- Plan anchoring. Borroughs offers a post foot angle (08702-829) for anchoring angle posts to the floor. Your building official and facility standards set the requirement; we design to the criteria your team provides.

Adjusting shelf spacing. Flexi-Bin shelves adjust on 1-1/2-inch increments and lock in place automatically. When the drawer mix changes, a row of drawers can move to a new height without rebuilding the bay. Follow the current Borroughs installation instructions for the shelf spacing your drawers and accessories need.
Going up. Borroughs states Flexi-Bins are sturdy enough to support a second level. A two-level parts room is an engineered project with permits, stairs and load questions, so we scope it separately.
Start with your parts list. A simple export of part number, description, package size and on-hand quantity is enough to estimate drawers, dividers and shelves. Our SKU upload analyzer can turn that list into a first-pass storage estimate before we talk.
