Borroughs Flexi-Bin Shelving for Auto Parts Stores in Utah

Borroughs lists auto parts stores among the classic Flexi-Bin users, and for good reason: thousands of small part numbers, kept in sequence, a few steps from the counter. Here is how we plan Flexi-Bin shelving for an independent or chain auto parts store in Utah, from the counter wall to the back room.

Why Auto Parts Stores Use Borroughs Flexi-Bin Shelving

An auto parts store sells speed. A customer walks up with a part number, a sample or just a year, make and model, and the counter person has a minute or two to find the right filter, sensor, bulb or belt. Most of that inventory is small, boxed and close in size, and much of it moves one or two pieces at a time. That is exactly the stock Borroughs designed Flexi-Bins for.

The Borroughs literature says it plainly: Flexi-Bins are a favorite among auto part stores, distribution outlets and retail operations, and they allow parts to remain in proper sequence for quick identification and retrieval. In practice that comes from a handful of features. The 12-inch shelf depth keeps small items at the front instead of lost at the back of a 24-inch shelf. Sliding dividers split each shelf into compartments sized to the box. Self-locking shelves adjust on 1-1/2-inch increments and, according to Borroughs, can be raised or lowered without disturbing what is on them. White back panels come standard, which makes labels and boxes easier to read under store lighting.

Compared with general-purpose steel shelving, the difference shows up in three places that matter to a parts store:

Store need How Flexi-Bin handles it Why it matters at the counter
Thousands of small part numbers Divided 12-in.-deep shelves with sliding dividers One part number per compartment, visible from the aisle
Constant line changes and new numbers Dividers slide sideways; shelves move without unloading Re-slotting a line takes minutes, not a weekend
Accurate counts and fewer mis-picks Formed-in label holder on every divider, bar-code friendly Labels stay with the part when the shelf is rearranged
Customer-facing walls Optional single- and double-face trim panels Runs behind the counter can look finished, not industrial

Flexi-Bin is the small-parts piece of a store, not the whole building. If you also run a distribution warehouse or a large commercial back room, see our guide to auto parts warehouse shelving and slotting. For a steel rivet shelving approach, our Cedar City auto parts store case study shows a different product line in a Utah store.

Planning the Store in Zones: Counter, Back Room, Floor and Commercial

Most auto parts stores we plan break into four storage zones. Flexi-Bin belongs in some of them and not others, and the model mix changes zone by zone.

Zone What lives there Flexi-Bin role
Counter wall (fast zone) Top-selling filters, bulbs, fuses, wiper refills, sensors, small hardware Primary. Divided units and drawers within a few steps of the registers
Back-room hard parts Brake pads, rotors, belts, hoses, ignition and electrical parts in line order Primary. Long runs, often back-to-back, in part-number sequence
Sales floor Accessories, chemicals, small tools, merchandised impulse items Optional. Trim-paneled units for small boxed accessories; gondolas handle most of the floor
Commercial and delivery staging Pulled orders waiting for drivers or shop pickup Supporting. A few open-shelf units for staging; carts and staging shelves do the rest

The counter wall. The wall directly behind the registers is the most valuable storage in the store. We usually put the highest-volume small parts here on divided Flexi-Bin units, with fluids and bulky top sellers on the lower shelves. Borroughs offers 84-in. single-face and double-face trim panels (13100-000 and 13101-000), which help when customers look straight at the run all day.

Commercial accounts. Stores that deliver to repair shops need a place for pulled orders. Our page on wholesale parts delivery staging covers that area in detail, and the same counter ideas used in dealerships are in our parts counter and will-call storage guide.

Back-room hard parts. This is where Flexi-Bin earns its keep. Long rows of divided units hold line after line in sequence, so a counter person can walk to a known location instead of searching. Back-to-back rows down the middle of the room roughly double the shelf faces of a wall-only layout.

Returns and cores. Keep warranty returns and cores on their own marked shelves, away from sellable stock. Our returns and core storage page has a fuller plan for stores with heavy core traffic.

What Belongs on Flexi-Bin Shelving in a Parts Store, and What Does Not

Borroughs rates each Flexi-Bin shelf at 150 lbs., which covers most store inventory. The items that cause trouble are the heavy, bulky and oddly shaped ones. This is the split we use when we plan a store.

Item group Recommended storage Why
Oil, air, fuel and cabin filters Divided Flexi-Bin shelves (3-in. or 6-in. dividers) Boxes stand upright with the part number facing out
Bulbs, fuses, relays, sensors Closely spaced divided shelves or drawers Small, high-count items need many compartments
Clips, fasteners, O-rings, small hardware Flexi-Bin drawers with drawer dividers Loose pieces stay contained; Borroughs drawers have a backstop
Brake pads, ignition parts, gaskets Divided shelves in line-code sequence Uniform box sizes slot neatly in sequence
Belts, hoses, wiper blades Open Flexi-Bin shelves with few dividers, or hanging displays Long items need width, not more compartments
Brake rotors and drums Open Flexi-Bin shelves on low levels Check weight against the 150 lb. shelf rating; keep heavy items low
Batteries, cases of oil, antifreeze, tires Heavy-duty shelving, battery racks or pallet rack Weight and bulk are outside the Flexi-Bin design

Heavier parts. The Borroughs literature shows brake rotors stored on open Flexi-Bin shelves without dividers, and the FB101 is listed for exactly that kind of use. Our rule: add up what will sit on a shelf, stay under the 150 lb. rating and keep the heaviest items on the lowest levels, where they are also easiest to lift.

Fluids and chemicals. Single bottles and small cans of additives, brake fluid and coolant work fine on lower Flexi-Bin shelves. Full cases of oil and jugs of washer fluid belong on heavier shelving or rack near the receiving door.

Choosing Pre-Configured Flexi-Bin Units for an Auto Parts Store

Borroughs offers eight pre-configured Flexi-Bin units. All are 38 inches wide, 12 inches deep and 84 inches tall; what changes is how each is divided. The store uses below are our planning suggestions, not manufacturer designations.

Model Adjustable shelves Openings Dividers / drawers Where it fits in a parts store
FB101 6 7 None Rotors, drums, larger boxed parts on the lowest levels
FB102 8 9 None Mixed boxed hard parts; flexible space for new lines
FB103 10 11 None Many thin boxes such as brake pads on close shelf spacing
FB104 6 21 14 six-inch dividers Tall filter boxes and larger boxed parts
FB105 8 41 32 three-inch dividers Filters, sensors and gaskets by part number
FB106 10 51 40 three-inch dividers High-count small parts: bulbs, relays, fuses
FB107 10 43 28 three-inch + 6 six-inch dividers, 12 drawers Counter wall: fast movers above, small hardware in drawers
FB108 17 0 108 drawers Clips, fasteners, O-rings and specialty hardware

Model data from the Borroughs Flexi-Bin product literature. Frames are also sold separately in 84-in. (PBF-12-84) and 96-in. (PBF-12-96) heights for custom configurations.

A typical store mix. For a counter wall we often start with FB107 units, then FB105 and FB106 units for the back-room small-parts lines, an FB108 for loose hardware and FB101 or FB103 units for rotors and brake pads. Your line count, box sizes and room shape decide the real numbers.

Custom runs. Slide-in shelves (02720-099), sliding dividers in 1-1/2, 3, 4-1/2 and 6-inch heights, drawers (04432-099) and drawer dividers (04436-099) are all sold separately. A store can re-divide a unit later instead of replacing it, the same way the St. George Ford dealership in our case study added drawers and shelves to existing frames.

Color. Borroughs lists seven Flexi-Bin colors: black, blue, industrial gray, mist gray, pebble, red and white. Many stores pick a color that matches their brand for the counter wall and a neutral gray for the back room.

Drawers for the smallest parts. Drawers keep loose items from spilling across a shelf, and Borroughs equips its Flexi-Bin drawers with a backstop that prevents accidental removal. Optional drawer dividers split each drawer further. In a store, a bank of drawers near the counter often replaces several loose parts cabinets.

Slotting a Parts Store: Line Codes, Sequence and Labels

Parts stores usually organize by line code and part number, because that is how the catalog and point-of-sale system think. Flexi-Bin was built for sequence storage, so the main decisions are how to split fast movers from the rest and how much room to leave.

Approach How it works on Flexi-Bin Best for
Strict line-code sequence Each line runs in part-number order across divided shelves Stores with experienced counter staff and frequent counts
Fast zone plus sequence Top sellers by unit volume at the counter wall; everything else in sequence in back Busy stores where most tickets come from a small share of numbers
By category Filters, electrical, brakes and hardware grouped in their own aisles Smaller independents with a few thousand active numbers

Labels that move with the part. Borroughs Flexi-Bin sliding dividers have a patented formed-in label holder that travels with the divider when parts are rearranged. Full-length label holders (09656-094) and blank labels (08897-099, 240 per package) cover the shelf edge.

Bar codes. Borroughs notes that Flexi-Bins used along with a bar coding system help give accurate, up-to-date inventory control. Most parts-store systems can print location or part labels; we plan divider spacing so those labels fit.

  • Start from sales data. A report of part number, line code, box size, on-hand quantity and units sold is enough. Our SKU upload analyzer can turn that export into shelf, divider and drawer estimates.
  • Leave growth space. New vehicle models add numbers every year. Plan roughly one empty compartment in ten per line so a new number does not force a full re-slot.
  • Plan the seasons. Utah stores swing from wiper blades, batteries and winter chemicals to A/C parts and cooling system parts. Adjustable shelves make that swap easier.
  • Mark the overflow. Keep overstock off the pick face, on upper shelves or in a separate overstock run, and label it so counts stay accurate.

Re-slotting without unloading. Borroughs designed the self-locking shelves so they can be raised or lowered without disturbing their contents. When a line grows or a box size changes, slide the dividers and move the shelf; the labels go with them.

Utah Planning Notes for Auto Parts Store Projects

Anchoring. Tall shelving in Utah retail spaces is commonly anchored, especially where customers stand near the run. Borroughs offers a post foot angle (08702-829) for anchoring Flexi-Bin angle posts to the floor. Your local building official and your landlord or corporate standards set the requirement; we design to the criteria your team provides. Our parts room shelving anchoring guide covers the common questions.

Working around open hours. Most stores cannot close for a refit. We plan deliveries and installation in phases, often one aisle or one section of the counter wall at a time, so the store keeps selling while new units go in.

Second level. Borroughs states Flexi-Bins are sturdy enough to support a second level. In a store with a tall back room, that can double small-parts storage, but it is an engineered project with permits, stairs and load questions, so we scope it separately. Our automotive parts room mezzanine page explains the options.

Across the state. Our Salt Lake City team supports stores from Logan and Ogden through Salt Lake and Utah County to Cedar City and St. George. Borroughs ships to your site, and we coordinate delivery and installation. Some common sizes are in stock at select manufacturers, subject to confirmation at quote time.
