The project

Wheeler Machinery Co. is a Caterpillar heavy equipment dealer headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, running one of the largest construction equipment rental fleets in the state. Material Handling USA supplied cantilever rack and boltless shelving for rental fleet attachment storage.

This case study covers a different storage problem than the other equipment-dealer project in our series. Why a rental fleet attachment yard is different

Attachments are heavy, bulky and irregularly shaped. Excavator buckets, forks, hammers and quick couplers don’t stack on a pallet the way boxed parts do — they need open, arm-supported storage sized to their actual shape and weight.

Inventory turns constantly. Rental attachments go out and come back on a rental schedule, not a purchase order schedule, so storage needs to support fast staging and retrieval rather than long-term bulk storage.

Small ground-engaging hardware needs its own system. Bucket teeth, pins, bushings and adapters are small, numerous, and easy to lose track of if they’re stored loosely near the large attachments they belong with.

Yard and building space is often mixed. A rental branch commonly stores some attachments outdoors in the yard and others inside under cover; indoor racking has to work within the building footprint available.

Leave open cantilever bays for fleet growth. Sizing the initial layout with a few open arm positions avoids a disruptive re-layout the first time a new attachment type is added to the fleet.

Group attachments by machine class, not alphabetically. Storing attachments compatible with a given machine size class together speeds up matching the right attachment to an outgoing rental.

Keep GET inventory countable. Bin labeling and slotting by part number on shelving makes cycle counts of high-turnover ground-engaging tools faster and more accurate than loose bulk storage.

Coordinate indoor racking with outdoor yard storage. Where some attachments live in an outdoor yard and others move to covered racking for the off-season or for smaller hardware, the indoor layout should account for that seasonal shift in volume.

Size cantilever arm capacity to the heaviest attachment, not the average. A single arm level might hold a light bucket one week and a heavy hydraulic hammer the next; specifying arm capacity for the heaviest realistic load keeps every position safe regardless of what’s staged there.

Seasonal demand and multi-branch considerations

Construction equipment rental has real seasonal swings, and a dealer with multiple branches has additional layout considerations beyond a single warehouse.

Size for peak-season attachment volume, not average. Attachment inventory at a branch typically peaks during the busy construction season; leaving open cantilever positions sized for that peak avoids overflow attachments staged outside the rack system when demand is highest.

Standardize the layout across branches where practical.
