Veterans Trading Company is a service-disabled veteran-owned small business that provides supply chain and procurement support to commercial firms and federal prime contractors. Its Salt Lake City operation handles purchasing, inspection and kitting work, which means a steady flow of boxed parts and materials that has to be stored, found and staged quickly.
In November 2022 the company came back to our Salt Lake City office for more clip shelving. Earlier that year it had bought a small add-on of matching clip shelving components from us. This time it needed a full run of tall, braced units, delivered and installed before the holidays slowed everything down.

The Need: More Tall Storage for a Busy Supply Chain Floor
A procurement and kitting operation lives on accuracy. Parts arrive in bulk, are inspected, broken down and packed into kits for customers, and every step depends on material sitting in a known location. When incoming volume grows, open floor space fills with cartons first, and pick accuracy is usually the next thing to suffer.
Veterans Trading Company already used clip shelving from us and wanted more of the same system so the new units would match the existing ones. Keeping one system meant shelves, posts and accessories stay interchangeable, staff do not have to learn a second product, and future add-ons are simple to order.
The team also asked a practical question on day one: once the shelving was delivered, how soon could it be installed? Our answer was right away. That question shaped the plan, because material sitting in crates on a working floor is almost as disruptive as having no shelving at all.
Why Clip Shelving Was the Right Fit
Clip shelving, sometimes called industrial steel shelving, uses one-piece formed steel shelves that attach to slotted posts with shelf clips. There are no bolts through every shelf, so levels move quickly when the stored mix changes, and the finished units are rigid enough for dense cartons and parts.
This project used Western Pacific clip shelving with angle posts and delta posts. Each section carries seven shelf levels, which puts a lot of storage on a small footprint when the building has the height for it. Manufacturer literature is on our Western Pacific shelving brochures page.
Compared with boltless shelving in Salt Lake City, clip shelving is the better choice when you want many closely spaced levels of boxed parts, optional closed backs and sides, and accessories such as dividers and bin fronts. Our industrial shelving comparison walks through the trade-offs.
Double X bracing. Tall shelving needs bracing to stay square and stable. The quote called for X sway braces on both the sides and the backs of the run, which resists racking in both directions and keeps shelves level under uneven loads.
Foot plates and anchoring. Every post sat on a foot plate, and the installation scope included anchoring the units to the concrete floor. In Utah that is a sensible default for tall shelving; our shelving anchoring and seismic guide explains why.
Room to grow. Because the new units match the customer’s existing clip shelving, extra shelves, closed panels, parts shelving dividers or more sections can be added later without mixing systems.
From Quote to Installed Shelving in 20 Days
The project moved quickly because the customer knew the system, decisions were made the same day, and installation was booked as soon as the material arrived. This is the sequence it followed.
Quote and approval
On November 15, 2022 our Salt Lake City team sent a quote for clip shelving with bracing, freight and an installation option. The customer decided to move forward that evening.
Order placed
The order and a separate installation order went out the next day, November 16, so the manufacturer and our install partner were both lined up from the start.
Material received
Within about a week the customer confirmed the shelving had arrived. We asked right away when installation would work around the holiday schedule.
Install scheduled
The customer asked for the soonest date possible, and our install partner booked the crew for December 5.
Installed and signed off
The crew assembled and anchored the run on December 5, 2022. The customer emailed the same afternoon that the shelving was installed and everything looked great, and the job closed with a signed work order and photos.
Two details made the schedule work. First, installation was part of the order from the beginning rather than an afterthought, so there was no second round of quoting once the crates landed. Second, the customer received the material directly and the install date was set as soon as delivery was confirmed.

Lessons for Utah Warehouses Adding Clip Shelving
- Match what you already have. Staying with one shelving system keeps parts interchangeable and makes future add-ons easy. Tell us the brand and post style you own.
- Buy installation with the shelving. Booking the crew in the same order avoids a gap between delivery and assembly, when cartons of parts sit on the floor.
- Brace and anchor tall units. Side and back X bracing plus floor anchoring is a practical standard for tall shelving along the Wasatch Front.
- Use the height. Seven levels per section stores far more on the same footprint than short units. Plan a rolling ladder or step stool for top shelves.
- Plan around holidays and shutdowns. Year-end schedules fill fast. Ordering in mid November still allowed an early December install here.
- Check availability early. Some common sizes are in stock at select manufacturers, subject to confirmation, which can shorten lead time.
