What Is a Cubby Locker?

A cubby locker is a steel unit divided into equal open compartments — a locker without doors. Each person gets their own cubby for a bag, a lunch, a jacket, a hard hat or a pair of boots, and can see and grab their things in a second. Because there are no doors, hinges or latches, cubbies cost less per person than lockers, never jam, and fit more people into a short wall.

The trade-off is security: anything in a cubby is visible and reachable. Cubbies work where people and belongings are supervised or low-value — staff rooms, classrooms, gyms, employee entrances, PPE stations — and lockable box lockers or full employee lockers take over where phones, wallets and keys need a lock.

Search for “cubby lockers” and most results are wood or laminate preschool cubbies. This page covers all-steel cubbies built for daily use in workplaces, schools and public buildings.

How Tennsco Steel Cubbies Are Built

Tennsco describes its cubbies as all-steel welded construction with a powder-coated finish, and its cubby specification spells out the details:

  • Steel: cold-rolled carbon steel; sides, back, top, bottom, shelves and partitions are 22-gauge.
  • Welded back: the back is resistance-welded to the sides, top and bottom, which keeps the unit square.
  • Box-formed edges: the top and bottom have a 1-11/16″ box formation on the front, and each shelf has a 3/4″ box front for strength and a label edge.
  • Adjustable shelves: shelves hook into clips and adjust on 1″ centers; partitions nest together so there are no exposed edges.
  • Base: four 1/2″ plastic feet; no legs.

FinishFive-stage cleaning and phosphate pretreatment, then electrostatically applied polyester/epoxy powder with a 55–65 gloss reading and a salt-spray rating of 250 hours or more (Tennsco spec).
ColorsFive standard colors — Black, Champagne/Putty, Light Grey, Medium Grey and Sand — with premium colors such as Yellow, Crimson and Evergreen at an upcharge from Tennsco.
Delivered assembledCubbies are welded units, so there is nothing to bolt together on site. Plan for a 34-1/2″ wide cabinet coming through the door and anchor it once placed.

Cubby Accessories: Shelves, Hooks and Clear Bins

Tennsco extra steel shelf for a cubby locker in medium grey with shelf clips

Extra shelves ($11.07 online) split a cubby into two shorter openings or add a shoe level. Because shelves adjust on 1″ centers, you can tune the spacing for binders, helmets or lunch boxes. Replacement shelf clips are sold separately too.

Coat hooks turn a cubby into a mini locker for jackets and bags. Tennsco provides three hooks with each unit, one double coat hook can be added beneath each shelf, and each hook holds up to 30 lb. Hooks can be factory welded into assembled units if specified when ordering.

Clear bins in 2″, 4″, 6″ and 8″ heights slide into the cubbies so small items — gloves, earplugs, art supplies, sample cups, parts — stay sorted and visible. They are sold separately; ask us to confirm current availability and lead time with your quote.

Label the front edge of each shelf with names or numbers, and give every cubby the same contents rule (one bag, one lunch, one coat) so the unit stays tidy. Browse the full cubby category for shelves, clips and bins, and locker accessories for number plates and anchoring hardware.

Cubbies vs Lockers vs Box Lockers

The right choice comes down to one question: does each person need a lock? If yes, you need doors. If not, a cubby is cheaper per person, faster to use and easier to keep clean.

A popular hybrid: put cubbies where coats, bags and gear go, and a bank of small box lockers next to them for phones and wallets. Workers drop the bulky things in the open cubby and lock up the valuables.

If you want coat hanging plus lockable compartments in one fixture, Lyon’s LockeRack frames an open coat-rod section with small lockable doors — 16 doors on the full system with a padlock hasp on each, built with 16-gauge doors and 24-gauge body parts. It is listed in our Lyon lockers category.

Where Steel Cubby Lockers Work Best

Staff rooms and workrooms. Teachers, nurses and office staff need somewhere to drop a tote, a laptop bag and a lunch that is not the floor under their desk. A 52″ cubby gives twelve people their own spot in under three feet of wall, and the top holds shared supplies. For lockable staff storage see hospital staff lockers and office lockers.

Employee entrances and PPE stations. At a plant or warehouse entry, cubbies hold hard hats, safety glasses, vests and boots so gear is picked up on the way in and returned on the way out. Pair them with lockers in the change room; our warehouse and industrial lockers guide covers sizing for shift change.

Schools and daycareLow 30″ and 40″ cubbies keep backpacks, coats and lunch boxes within a child’s reach; steel survives years of classroom use and wipes clean.
Gyms and fitness studiosMembers drop shoes, water bottles and jackets by the studio door during a class where staff can see the cubbies.
Healthcare and labsGowning areas and clinics use cubbies for clean scrubs, shoe covers and personal bags outside controlled rooms.
Churches, libraries and community centersCoat and bag drop zones for volunteers and visitors with no keys to manage.
Mudrooms and break roomsBoots on the bottom row, jackets on hooks, lunch in the middle — a tidy replacement for a pile by the door.
Supply and tool roomsTennsco also positions cubbies for supply storage and books; add clear bins to sort small items.

Planning a Cubby Wall

  • Count people, then add spares: one cubby per person on the busiest shift or class, plus a few for visitors and new hires.
  • Measure the wall: each unit is 34-1/2″ wide and 13-1/2″ deep. Four units side by side take about 11.5 feet and give 24 to 72 cubbies depending on height.
  • Match height to the user: low units for children, 52″ or 66″ when every opening should be in easy adult reach, 78″ when wall space is the constraint.
  • Anchor every unit: Tennsco strongly recommends anchoring lockers to the floor or wall; a tall, loaded cubby can tip if someone climbs or pulls on it.
  • Leave aisle space: people stand in front of a cubby wall while they load it; keep the walkway clear of door swings and traffic. Accessible routes and reach ranges are covered in our ADA lockers guide.
  • Decide on valuables: if phones or wallets will be stored, add a bank of box lockers or a smart locker rather than relying on open cubbies.

Cubby Locker FAQs

What is a cubby locker?
A cubby locker is a steel unit divided into open compartments with no doors, so each person gets a cubby for a bag, lunch, coat or gear. It costs less per person than a locker but offers no lock.
What sizes do steel cubby lockers come in?
Tennsco cubbies are 34-1/2 inches wide and 13-1/2 inches deep in five heights: 30 inches (6 cubbies), 40 (9), 52 (12), 66 (15) and 78 (18), always three cubbies across.
How much do cubby lockers cost?
In our catalog the Tennsco steel cubbies currently range from $420.02 for the 30 inch, 6-opening unit to $810.00 for the 78 inch, 18-opening unit, before freight.
Can cubby lockers be locked?
No. Cubbies are open by design. If people need to lock up phones or wallets, add box lockers or choose a locker with doors, such as a double-tier or six-tier box locker.
Are the shelves in a cubby locker adjustable?
Yes. Tennsco cubby shelves hook into clips and adjust on 1 inch centers, and extra shelves and clips are sold separately.
Can I add coat hooks to a cubby?
Yes. Tennsco includes three hooks per unit and allows one double coat hook beneath each shelf; each hook holds up to 30 lb.
Do cubby lockers need to be anchored?
Tennsco strongly recommends anchoring all lockers to the floor or wall. Tall cubbies especially should be anchored so they cannot tip when loaded or pulled on.
Are cubby lockers in stock?
Some common sizes are in stock at select manufacturers, subject to confirmation. We confirm availability, freight and lead time when you order or request a quote.
