Metro Literature, and How to Actually Use It
Metro is the brand of InterMetro Industries, founded in 1929 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania — the company that created the original Super Erecta wire shelving system and now catalogs more than 30,000 products. That breadth is why Metro literature is split across dozens of brochures instead of one book: foodservice, healthcare, carts, high-density storage, retail, MRO storerooms and heated holding.

Spec sheets are model-by-model
Brochures show families; spec sheets, drawings and CAD files are published per model. Send the model numbers — or a photo of the page — and we will return the current spec sheets with your quote. Sanitation and electrical listings are model-specific, and we confirm any listing in writing before you order.
How to Read a Metro Catalog Page
Nearly every Metro shelving listing is built from four pieces: system name, shelf size, post height and finish. Read those four and the catalog opens up.
1. System name first. Super Erecta is wire; MetroMax i, Q and 4 are polymer; qwikSIGHT is basket shelving; SmartWall and SmartLever are wall systems; qwikTRAK and Top-Track are high-density track. Systems are not interchangeable — MetroMax shelves land on MetroMax posts.
2. Shelf size is depth × width. Depths run roughly 14″ to 24″, widths about 24″ to 72″. Depth is front-to-back and it eats your aisle: in a walk-in, 18″ with a reachable face beats 24″ with product hidden at the back.
3. Post height sets shelf count. Posts are catalogued in stationary and mobile heights; mobile posts are shorter so the finished unit still clears a doorway on casters. Usable clear space is post height divided by shelf count, minus shelf thickness.
4. Finish code closes the model. Two otherwise identical units behave very differently in a wet room — finishes are next.
A complete unit includes four posts; an add-on unit shares posts with the unit beside it, so system and finish must match. Stationary and mobile are different catalog numbers. Seismic anchoring is its own accessory family and a real requirement in much of the Intermountain West.
Metro Finishes and Materials — What Each One Is For
Finish is the highest-consequence choice on a Metro order and the cheapest to get wrong. Match it to the moisture and cleaning regime of the room, not to the rest of the building.

Epoxy is a coating over the wire: it handles humidity well but not abrasive pads or harsh chemistry, which is stainless territory. Metro offers Microban product protection on selected lines; we will tell you which lines and let the manufacturer’s documentation speak for itself.
MetroMax polymer shelves use removable mats on an open-grid frame, so mats come out for cleaning while the frame keeps air moving — in cold, wet storage that usually outlasts coated wire. Unsure? Tell us how often the room gets wet, what cleans it, and whether it is refrigerated.

Laboratory and cleanroom
Lab selection follows chemistry and cleanability. High-density storage covers fitting more samples into a fixed footprint; the commercial shelving brochure covers stationary and mobile lab units. For cleanrooms the decision is material grade — Type 304 versus Type 316 stainless, or polymer.

From a Catalog Page to a Quote: What We Need
A brochure tells you what exists. A quote needs these facts; gather them and most projects get priced the same day.
Mobile versus static carries most of the money. A stationary run is cheaper and never rolls out of position; a mobile unit lets one person clean beneath it. High-density track systems — qwikTRAK on the floor, Top-Track overhead — remove fixed aisles and typically add 30 to 50 percent more shelf area in the same room.
Shelf type: wire moves air for produce and cold storage; solid shelves catch spills; polymer mats split the difference and come out for cleaning; baskets keep loose items visible. Send drawings, a sketch or phone photos with a tape measure in frame.
Do not forget the accessory layer. Dividers, ledges, label holders, dunnage racks, enclosure panels and security doors turn shelving into a working storeroom, and each is a separate line item. Casters matter too: diameter changes height and rollability, tread changes floor protection, and cart-wash duty needs specific construction.

Metro Systems at a Glance
The brochures assume you already know which system you are shopping, so here is the one-line version. Super Erecta is the original wire system in chrome, brite, epoxy and stainless, and the Super Adjustable version lets shelves move without dismantling the unit. Super Erecta Pro is coated wire for wet foodservice and grocery. MetroMax i, Q and 4 are polymer, with removable grid mats and corrosion-free posts. qwikSIGHT is basket shelving, single or double sided, static or mobile.
SmartWall and SmartLever put shelving on the wall when the floor is full. qwikTRAK and Top-Track are the floor-track and overhead-track high-density systems. Security shelving adds enclosure panels and SlideSecure doors so high-value inventory locks inside an existing run. Carts — utility, lab, medical and picking — move product to the point of use.
