What Is Chrome Wire Shelving?
Chrome wire shelving is open-wire steel shelving with a bright chrome-plated finish, built from four round posts and adjustable wire shelves that lock onto the posts with tapered plastic split sleeves. It is the most common wire shelving finish in commercial back rooms because it is strong, quick to assemble without tools, easy to see through and easy to keep clean in a dry room.
Buyers search for it as chrome shelving, chrome wire shelving units or chrome wire racks. The commercial versions we sell are NSF-listed food-equipment shelving, not the light household racks sold in big-box stores, and they share posts, sleeves and accessories across a whole run.

Why buyers choose chrome
- Open wire lets air and light through. Metro notes the open design reduces dust build-up and makes stored items easy to see.
- Shelves adjust in 1" steps. Grooved posts and split sleeves let you reset shelf heights as stock changes.
- One system grows with you. Add-on units share posts with the unit beside them, and the same posts take casters, track hardware and accessories.
- Bright, professional look. Chrome suits customer-facing back rooms, offices and clean supply areas.
- Commercial ratings. Metro Super Erecta shelves carry up to 800 lb each; Quantum chrome shelves are rated 600 to 800 lb.
Chrome vs. Zinc, Epoxy, Stainless and Polymer Wire Shelving
The finish matters more than the shelf size. Wire shelving looks alike from across the room, but the coating decides how long it lasts in your environment. Metro, the company that created Super Erecta shelving, groups its chrome and Brite finishes as basic storage for dry environments and recommends coated or polymer shelving for anything wet or cold. Use this table to place chrome correctly.
| Finish | Best for | Avoid | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chrome-plated | Dry storerooms, retail, offices, dry food storage, clean supply | Walk-in coolers, freezers, dish rooms, washdown, salty or acidic product | Bright finish, NSF-listed commercial models |
| Brite / zinc-type | Dry storage where looks matter less | Moisture and humidity | Metro lists its Brite (chromate) finish beside chrome as a dry-storage option |
| Epoxy-coated (e.g. Metroseal) | Walk-in coolers, freezers, humid rooms | Abrasion that chips the coating | Metro’s Super Erecta Pro pairs Metroseal Green frames with removable polymer mats |
| Stainless steel | Washdown, corrosive and clean areas | Tight budgets | Corrosion resistant but not rust-proof, per Metro |
| Polymer (e.g. MetroMax) | Wet coolers, washdown, sterile processing | Very hot or very heavy point loads | MetroMax 4 and MetroMax i carry a lifetime warranty against rust and corrosion |

Where chrome fails, and what to use instead

Chrome plating protects the steel in a dry room. Moisture, condensation and salty or acidic spills get through it over time, and the shelf starts to show rust. Metro says plainly that it does not recommend chrome shelving in a wet environment like a cooler. That is why most kitchens use chrome in the dry storage room and epoxy or polymer in the walk-in.
If your room is cold, damp or washed down, skip ahead to our walk-in cooler shelving guide, or compare stainless steel shelving and MetroMax polymer shelving. For a Metro-only finish breakdown, see Metro wire shelving finishes.
Chrome Wire Shelving Sizes
Chrome wire shelving is sold by shelf depth, shelf length and post height. Shelf depth is the front-to-back measurement, length is the side-to-side span, and the post sets the overall height. Quantum offers chrome shelves from 12" to 36" deep and 24" to 72" long, about 50 size combinations; Metro Super Erecta chrome units come in 14" to 36" depths with the same 24" to 72" lengths.
| Dimension | Common sizes | How to choose |
|---|---|---|
| Depth | 12", 14", 18", 21", 24", 30", 36" | Match the largest carton or tote; 18" and 24" are the most common back-room depths |
| Length | 24", 30", 36", 42", 48", 54", 60", 72" | Shelves 48" and shorter carry more weight; use 60"-72" for light, bulky items |
| Post height | 54", 63", 74", 86" (taller when anchored) | 74" is a reachable standard; 86" adds a level for light stock |
| Shelves per unit | 4 or 5 in kits; add more on the same posts | Metro recommends no more than 30" between shelves |
Height limits by depth
Narrow units tip more easily, so manufacturers cap post height by shelf depth. Metro’s instructions allow free-standing stationary units up to 63" tall at 14" deep, 86" at 18" and 21" deep, and 96" at 24" to 36" deep. With footplates or wall brackets anchored to the floor or wall, any depth can go to 96". Mobile units have lower limits, covered below.
Plan the top shelf for light, slow-moving stock, keep heavy items low, and leave sprinkler clearance your fire marshal requires.

Chrome Wire Shelving Load Capacity: Per Shelf and Per Unit
Two ratings matter: what one shelf holds and what the whole unit holds. Both assume the weight is spread evenly across the shelf. Light household racks can look the same but carry far less, so check the published rating, not the appearance.
| Rating | Metro Super Erecta (chrome) | Quantum chrome | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Per shelf, 48" or shorter | 800 lb | 600-800 lb (by size) | Short spans carry the most |
| Per shelf, 54" and longer | 600 lb | 600-800 lb (by size) | Long spans deflect more, so ratings drop |
| Stationary unit | 2,000 lb max | See model spec | All shelves together cannot exceed the unit rating |
| Mobile unit | 3 x caster rating, max 1,000 lb | See model spec | Casters, not shelves, set the limit |
- Shelf rating vs. unit rating: five 800 lb shelves do not make a 4,000 lb unit. On Metro units the unit maximum is 2,000 lb, so a fully loaded five-shelf unit averages 400 lb per shelf.
- Heavy, concentrated loads need help. For kegs, sacks or cases on the floor level, Metro’s dunnage shelves are rated 1,000-1,600 lb depending on length; see dunnage racks.
- Do not drop loads or bump with forklifts. Shock loads are outside every published rating.
- Post the rating. Label the unit with its capacity so staff know the limit.
Starter Units, Add-On Units and Corner Units
A starter unit has four posts and stands on its own. An add-on unit has two posts plus S-hooks that hang its shelves from the posts of the unit beside it, so a run of five bays is one starter and four add-ons. Metro’s instructions require two S-hooks per shelf and limit add-ons to stationary use.
Add-ons save floor space and cost, and they make a continuous wall of shelving. The same S-hooks also build right-angle corners, so an L or U layout can share posts at the corner and leave the inside corner open.

| Build | Posts | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Starter unit | 4 | A single freestanding unit or the first bay of a run |
| Add-on unit | 2 + S-hooks | Each extra bay in a straight stationary run |
| Corner (right angle) | Shared at the corner | L- and U-shaped rooms where floor space is tight |
| Mobile unit | 4 with stem casters | Carts and units that move for cleaning or staging |
Assembly takes minutes: snap split sleeves onto the same numbered groove on all four posts, slide the shelf corners over the sleeves, then tap the shelf down to lock it. Our wire shelving installation guide walks through it, including leveling and wall anchoring.
Mobile Chrome Wire Shelving and Carts

Swap the leveling feet for stem casters and a chrome unit becomes a cart for staging orders, moving linens or rolling stock out of the way for floor cleaning. Mobile units use two swivel and two swivel-brake casters, and the bottom shelf must sit on the lowest post groove.
- Metro caps mobile units at three times the caster rating, never more than 1,000 lb total.
- Maximum post height on stem casters is 54" at 14" deep, 74" at 18"-21" and 86" at 24"-36".
- Push mobile units along their long side, not end-first.
More options are on our Metro mobile shelving units page.
High-density chrome track shelving
When the room is full, chrome units can ride on track. Metro qwikTRAK floor track and Top-Track overhead track let mobile units slide side to side so you keep one working aisle instead of one aisle per row. That turns aisle space into shelf space in stockrooms, pharmacies and records rooms. See track shelving for layouts and kits.

Chrome Wire Shelving Accessories
Accessories turn a plain unit into storage that fits the job. Most mount to the same posts or shelf edges, so you can add them later.
Basket shelvesDeep wire baskets for bagged or loose items that would fall through a flat shelf.

- Shelf ledges and dividers keep cartons and files upright and stop items sliding off the back.
- Shelf mats or liners give small items a flat surface on open wire.
- Label holders clip to the shelf edge for location and SKU labels.
- Bins hang from or sit on wire shelves; see wire shelving with bins.
- Wall brackets, footplates and seismic posts anchor tall units; Metro offers SiteSelect seismic posts for Super Erecta.
Chrome Wire Shelving Brands We Supply
| Brand | Chrome lines | Learn more |
|---|---|---|
| Metro (InterMetro) | Super Erecta and Super Adjustable Super Erecta starter, add-on and mobile units; qwikTRAK and Top-Track | Metro wire shelving |
| Quantum Storage Systems | Chrome starter kits, add-on kits, shelves, posts, mobile and slanted units | Quantum Storage Systems |
| Jaken | Chrome wire shelving units, add-ons, mobile carts and service carts | Jaken |
We mix brands only where parts are designed to work together. Posts and split sleeves from different manufacturers look similar but are not guaranteed to interchange, so add-ons and replacement shelves should match the brand already on site.
Where Chrome Wire Shelving Works Best
Chrome earns its place anywhere storage is dry, visible and changes often.
Foodservice dry storageCanned goods, paper, packaging and dry ingredients outside the walk-in.
Parts rooms and MRO cribsBins of fittings and spares on open shelves you can see into.
Healthcare clean supplyDry supplies in clinics and hospital stockrooms.- Retail and e-commerce: backstock, returns and pick-and-pack staging. See commercial shelving.
- Offices, schools and IT rooms: supplies, devices and spares, with security units for valuables.
- Light industrial and warehouses: hand-picked cartons beside heavier industrial shelving.
- Not for wet rooms: walk-in coolers, freezers and dish areas need walk-in cooler shelving in epoxy, stainless or polymer.
How to Plan a Chrome Wire Shelving Room
Confirm it is dry
No condensation, washdown or salty product. If there is, choose a coated or polymer finish.
Measure stock and room
Largest carton, heaviest item, wall lengths, doors, columns and sprinkler height.
Pick sizes and units
Depth, length and post height, then starters, add-ons and corners for each wall.
Quote and install
Equipment, freight and optional installation on one quote, then delivery and setup.
- Measure overall size, not nominal size. Posts and corners add to the footprint, so check actual unit dimensions on the spec sheet before filling a wall.
- Leave aisle room for how you pick. Hand picking needs less space than carts.
- Keep the bottom shelf off the floor. Metro recommends at least 6" of clearance for cleaning.
- Anchor tall runs. Use wall brackets or footplates, and follow local seismic and fire rules.
