Cantilever rack for Idaho Falls, Pocatello and Eastern Idaho
Eastern Idaho runs on long material. The Snake River Plain is one of the largest irrigated farming regions in the West, so the supply houses in Idaho Falls, Rexburg, Blackfoot and Pocatello move a steady flow of PVC pipe, aluminum irrigation line, steel well casing, fence posts and drip and pivot parts. Add the lumber yards serving a growing Bonneville County, the steel and fabrication shops that work for farms, food plants and contractors at the Idaho National Laboratory, and you get a lot of stock that is too long for pallet rack and too valuable to leave on the ground.
Cantilever rack is built for exactly that. Columns stand in a row with arms reaching out from one or both sides, and there are no front uprights in the way, so a forklift or side loader can set a 20 foot or 40 foot load anywhere along the row. The stock lies along the row across several arms, which keeps it straight, sorted and easy to count.
Material Handling USA has designed, supplied and installed storage systems since 1997. We are based in Salt Lake City, about three hours south on I-15, and we have supplied rack to Eastern Idaho businesses in Idaho Falls and Pocatello. This page covers how to size cantilever for pipe and irrigation stock, which rack type fits which yard, what Idaho Falls and Pocatello require, and how delivery and installation work. For cantilever basics in more depth, see our main cantilever rack systems guide. If you also need pallet storage, see pallet racking in Idaho Falls and Pocatello.
Sizing cantilever rack for pipe and irrigation supply
Pipe and irrigation suppliers are the biggest cantilever users in Eastern Idaho, and they have the trickiest mix: rigid steel next to flexible plastic, short sticks next to very long aluminum line. These are the lengths and behaviors we plan around. Lengths vary by mill and supplier, so confirm yours.
| Stock | Common lengths | What matters on the rack | How we usually set it up |
|---|---|---|---|
| PVC irrigation and pressure pipe | 20 ft | Flexible, sags between arms, round so it rolls | Closer column spacing, arms with end stops, larger diameters on lower levels |
| Aluminum irrigation line | 30 and 40 ft | Light but very long and easy to dent | Longer rows with more columns, so the ends never hang far past the last arm |
| Steel pipe and well casing | About 20 ft single random, about 40 ft double random | Heavy, rigid, rolls | Structural or heavy-duty arms rated for the bundle weight, end stops, heaviest stock low |
| Fence posts, rail and tube | Mostly 10 to 24 ft | Mixed sizes and bundles | One size per level or per bay, labeled at the arm tips |
| HDPE poly pipe | Coils | Not a long stick | Stays on pallet rack or the floor, not on cantilever arms |

Two rules that keep pipe straight
Overhang: the stock hanging past the end arms should be no more than about half the distance between arms. A 20 foot stick on a short bay with long overhangs will droop at both ends.
Flexible stock needs more support: PVC and thin-wall tube sag where steel would not, so we tighten the column spacing for those levels or add decking across the arms.
Our cantilever pipe and tubing storage guide covers arm spacing and end stops in detail, and vertical bar and pipe racks suit short drops and remnants.
Plan for spring. Irrigation stock builds up before the season and drains fast once planting starts. Leave open arm levels or room for another bay so the yard can absorb the spring surge without pipe going back on the ground. Because cantilever columns and arms bolt together, a row can grow by adding columns and brace sets later, as long as the new parts match the original line. Our cantilever rack components guide explains what has to match.
Cantilever rack types we supply in Eastern Idaho
The right system depends on the weight per level, the length of the stock, whether it lives inside or out, and how it is loaded. This table matches common Eastern Idaho uses to the rack that usually fits.
| Rack type | Best for | Typical Eastern Idaho users |
|---|---|---|
| Single-sided cantilever | Rows against a wall or fence line | Plumbing counters, shop stock, yard perimeters |
| Double-sided cantilever | Freestanding rows loaded from both aisles | Pipe and lumber yards, irrigation dealers |
| Roll-formed medium-duty | Lighter loads indoors | PVC, conduit, trim, light tube |
| Structural heavy-duty | Heavy bundles and forklift contact | Steel service, well casing, fabrication shops |
| Hot-dip galvanized | Outdoor rows in snow and freeze-thaw | Pipe yards and building materials yards |
| Cantilever with a roof canopy | Covered outdoor storage | Lumber and stock that should stay dry |
| Portable cantilever carts | Moving stock to the work area | Fabrication shops and contractors |
Structural vs. roll-formed
Roll-formed cantilever is lighter and costs less, and it works well for PVC, conduit and light tube indoors. Structural cantilever is built from hot-rolled steel shapes and holds up better to heavy bundles of steel pipe and to the bumps that come with forklift loading in a busy yard.
Many Eastern Idaho suppliers use both: structural rows in the yard for steel and casing, and a lighter indoor row for plastic pipe and fittings stock. See our metal and steel storage cantilever guide for heavy loads.

Cantilever rack applications in Idaho Falls and Pocatello
These are the Eastern Idaho applications we plan cantilever for most often, with links to our detailed guides.

Irrigation dealers and pivot yards
Ag irrigation dealers store very long aluminum line next to steel casing, pivot spans and parts. An outdoor galvanized double-sided row keeps the pipe straight and off the ground, with heavy steel on the lower arms and lighter aluminum above.
Long aluminum line needs more columns per row than steel, so the ends of a 40 foot stick never hang far past the last arm. Short pieces and drops fit better in vertical bar and pipe racks or on portable carts.
Eastern Idaho and regional projects
We haven’t installed a cantilever-only project in Idaho Falls yet. Below are our real Eastern Idaho rack projects and our nearest cantilever projects, labeled honestly. We describe the business and the work, but we don’t publish layouts, quantities or prices.
The pattern is the same for Idaho pipe and supply businesses: start with the rows you need now, then add columns and arms as the yard grows. Designing on one cantilever line from the start keeps later parts compatible.
Outdoor yards: snow, frost, wind and earthquakes
Most pipe and lumber cantilever in Eastern Idaho lives outside, and the climate shapes the design.
Finish. Painted rack works indoors. Outdoors, freeze-thaw cycles, road salt tracked in by trucks and spring moisture make hot-dip galvanized columns and arms the better long-term choice.
Snow. The Idaho Falls Building Division’s geographic design criteria use a ground snow load of about 47 pounds per square foot, and Pocatello designs for about 45. Snow on open arms is part of the load the rack carries. If you add a roof canopy, the canopy is designed for the local snow and wind loads, which usually means heavier columns.
Frost and footings. Idaho Falls lists a 30 inch frost depth, and Pocatello 3 feet. Where outdoor rack sits on piers or footings rather than an existing slab, the engineer sizes them below frost so the row doesn’t heave. Asphalt and gravel are not reliable anchor bases on their own.
Seismic design for cantilever
Eastern Idaho sits in the Intermountain Seismic Belt, and Idaho Falls lists Seismic Design Category D unless a soils report shows otherwise. Cantilever rack has to resist sideways force along the row and front to back, which drives base size, anchor count and bracing.
Keep the heaviest bundles on the lower arms, load evenly on both sides of a double-sided row, and never load one side full while the other is empty. Our rack seismic compliance guide explains what engineers check.

Idaho Falls and Pocatello permits and code for cantilever rack
Each city and county in Eastern Idaho runs its own permit office, so confirm requirements for your address before you order. The rules below are summarized from published city and county sources.
Current code. Idaho Falls has adopted the 2018 International Building Code, and Pocatello enforces the 2018 IBC and 2018 Idaho Fire Code. Unincorporated Bonneville County also uses the 2018 codes. The Idaho Building Code Board has started rulemaking toward the 2024 codes, so check which edition applies when you submit.
| Cantilever rack | What to expect in Idaho Falls |
|---|---|
| 5 ft 9 in tall or less | Exempt from a building permit when movable and not fixed to the building |
| Over 5 ft 9 in up to 8 ft | Not exempt. Confirm with the Idaho Falls Building Division whether a permit and drawings are needed |
| Over 8 ft | Stamped structural drawings, structural calculations and a signed third-party Special Inspection Agreement, per the city’s commercial plan submission requirements |
| With a roof canopy | The canopy is a structure, so plan for engineered drawings for snow and wind loads and a building permit |
| Storage over 12 ft, or over 6 ft for high-hazard goods | High-piled storage rules, plus a fire department operational permit when the area exceeds 500 sq ft |
Most cantilever in a pipe or lumber yard is taller than 8 feet, so plan on engineered drawings and anchors that the special inspector checks. Indoors, plastic pipe stored high can trigger the fire code’s high-piled storage rules. Our warehouse fire safety guide covers the sprinkler side.

Install and sign-off
Columns are stood, braced and anchored, arms set at the planned levels, inspections completed and capacities posted.
After installation, keep forklift drivers from pushing loads against the columns, protect row ends near busy drives with guards, and inspect arms and connections regularly, especially after an earthquake. See our rack inspection and repair page.
New vs. used cantilever rack in Idaho Falls and Pocatello
Used cantilever comes up often in farm country. Before you count on the savings, it helps to know where the money goes.
Used savings are usually used up by installation. Rack that has been taken down and moved rarely goes back together cleanly. Arms from different lines don’t fit the columns, bolt holes don’t line up, and bent arms or bases need replacing. The installer time spent straightening and fitting used parts often costs more than the difference in price, so new rack frequently ends up cheaper once it’s installed. Stamped drawings for rack over 8 feet also depend on known capacities, which are hard to document for unmarked used parts.
Reusing rack you already own can work, especially for a straight move of a known system. Even then, new parts are sometimes cheaper after the fix-up time is counted.
The quickest way to decide is a call to our sales team with pictures of the columns, arms and any labels. We’ll tell you honestly whether it’s worth installing. Our used vs. new cantilever rack guide covers the trade-offs in more detail.
