Can You Buy Shelving Parts Without Buying Whole Units?
Usually, yes. Commercial steel, boltless and wire shelving is built from components, and most manufacturers sell those components on their own: uprights and end frames, shelves, beams, clips, sway braces, back and side panels, base strips, foot plates and sleeves. That is how a bent post, a few missing shelves or a half-finished run gets fixed without replacing the whole bay.
The catch is matching. Shelving parts are made for one system, and often for one series inside that brand. The questions we get most often sound like this:
- “We bought this shelving years ago. Can we get six more end frames and sixteen shelves to finish the row?”
- “I don’t know the brand. Can you tell from the pictures?”
- “Do the parts only come as a full set, or can I buy just the uprights?”
- “The line we have was discontinued. What can we add next to it?”
- “Will a part from a different brand fit if the size is the same?”
This page walks through how we answer those questions: identifying the system and brand, what to measure and photograph, which parts are sold separately, where brands do and do not mix, realistic lead times and when new units make more sense than parts. It sits under our shelving solutions hub, which compares every type of shelving we supply.
Step 1: Identify Your Shelving System
Before brand comes system. Each family uses a different way of holding the shelf, so the system alone rules out most wrong parts. Look at a corner of the unit and match it to one of these:
Closed steel clip shelvingSolid back and side panels close the unit. Shelves sit on clips hooked into holes in angle or beaded posts. Parts: posts, shelves, clips, panels, base strips.
Open steel clip shelvingOpen sides and back with X-shaped sway braces for stability. Same clip-and-post idea as closed shelving. Parts: posts, shelves, clips, side and back sway braces.
Boltless / rivet shelvingNo clips or bolts. Beams have rivets that drop into keyhole slots in the posts, and a deck rests on the beams. Parts: posts, beams, decks, center supports.
Wire and solid shelving on round postsRound posts with grooves about every inch. Plastic split sleeves snap into a groove and the shelf collar wedges over them. Parts: posts, shelves, sleeves, casters.
Heavy-duty bin and parts shelvingHeavier proprietary systems such as Equipto V-Grip, often with dividers and bin fronts. Parts are specific to the brand and series. Parts: uprights, shelves, dividers, bin fronts.
Beaded-post steel shelvingRolled bead on the post edge makes it stiffer than a plain angle. Used by several brands, with brand-specific hole patterns. Parts: beaded posts, shelves, clips or brackets.Mobile (track) shelving and pallet rack have their own parts and their own guides: see mobile shelving parts and components and pallet rack identification and compatibility.
Step 2: Find the Brand and Series
Once you know the system, the brand and series come from small details. Check these in order:
- Labels and stamps. Look for a sticker or stamped part number on the inside face of a post near the floor, on the underside of a shelf or on a load-rating label. Old packing lists, invoices and quote numbers are just as useful: if we supplied the shelving, an order or quote number lets us look it up.
- Post shape. Plain angle, beaded angle, T-post, keyhole-slotted boltless post or round wire post.
- Hole pattern. Round, square, teardrop or slotted holes, and how far apart they are on center.

| What to check | What it tells us | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Post profile | System and duty level | Angle and beaded posts on Lyon 2000 series; T-posts on Lyon 8000 series |
| Hole shape and spacing | Brand and series | Lyon clip shelving adjusts on 1-1/2" centers; wire posts are grooved about every inch |
| Clip or connector | Brand and series | Lyon 2000 clips are 13-gauge zinc; 8000 clips are 12-gauge galvanized |
| Shelf edge and corners | Brand and shelf style | Box-formed edges, flanged corners, ribbed or flat decks |
| Color name | Finish to order | Gray, putty, beige, blue or black, often with a brand-specific color name |
| Labels, part numbers, paperwork | Exact match | Sticker on a post, stamped number, old order or quote number |

The clip or connector is often the fastest giveaway. On steel clip shelving, a small steel clip hooks into the post holes and the shelf corner rests on it. On boltless shelving, rivets on the beam ends drop into keyhole slots. On wire shelving, a plastic sleeve clamps around a grooved round post. Photograph the clip or connector next to a tape measure, front and side.
Brands also change designs over the years, so a search for “old style” clips or posts usually means the shelving predates anyone on site. Match by photo and measurement rather than by name. Our shelf clips and dividers guide covers clip identification for Lyon, Tennsco and wire shelving in more detail.
Step 3: What to Measure and Photograph
Most parts matches can be made from good photos plus a handful of measurements. A manufacturer may still ask for more pictures before confirming a part, so sending a complete set the first time saves a round trip.
Photos to send:
- The whole unit or run, straight on.
- A close-up of one post with a tape measure along the holes.
- The clip, rivet or sleeve that holds a shelf, front and side.
- The underside of a shelf and its corner.
- Any label, sticker or stamped number.
- The damaged part, if you are replacing one.

Measurements we need
| Measurement | How to take it |
|---|---|
| Unit width | Outside of post to outside of post across the front |
| Unit depth | Front of post to back of post on the side |
| Post height | Floor to the top of the post |
| Shelf size | Width and depth of the shelf itself, plus its edge height |
| Hole spacing | Center of one hole to the center of the next, and the hole size |
| Post size | Each face of an angle post, or the diameter of a round post |
| Quantity | How many of each part, and whether units are starters or share posts (add-ons) |
Tell us the color and roughly when and where the shelving was bought. If you are finishing a partly built run, count how many complete bays you want in the end; we work backward to the parts list.
Which Shelving Parts Can Be Bought Separately
Here is what is typically available as a separate part for each system. What a given manufacturer still makes for a given series varies, so we confirm each part before quoting.
| System | Structure parts | Shelf parts | Bracing and add-ons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steel clip shelving (open and closed) | Angle, beaded or T-posts; upright assemblies (end frames) | Shelves, shelf clips, half-shelf clips | Side and back sway braces, back and side panels, base strips, foot plates, dividers, bin fronts |
| Boltless / rivet shelving | Posts (angle or T), end uprights | Single and double rivet beams, decks, center supports | Wire or particle board decks, deck supports, tie plates |
| Wire and solid shelving on round posts | Posts in many heights | Wire, solid or vented shelves, split sleeves | Casters, S-hooks, dividers, ledges, shelf liners |
| Heavy-duty bin and parts shelving | Uprights and end frames for that line | Shelves for that line | Dividers, bin fronts, label holders, drawers where offered |
Panels and end frames. On closed steel shelving, end panels and back panels give the unit its rigidity as well as its looks. A missing or dented panel is a structural part, not just a cover. Tennsco Q-Line, for example, has welded uprights listed by depth and height, so one damaged end can be swapped on its own.
Some lines are sold as upright assemblies (two posts already joined into an end frame) rather than single posts. Lyon 8000 series T-post upright assemblies, in our store above, are one example. If the series you have is only sold as assemblies, you replace the frame, not one post.

Bracing and hardware. Sway braces, face braces and cross braces keep open shelving square. When a run starts to rack or lean, a missing brace is often the reason, and braces are among the cheapest parts to replace. Face braces come in versions for angle posts and for beaded posts, so match the post type.
Small parts come in packs. Clips, sleeves and fasteners are often sold in packs rather than singly. Lyon 8000 series shelf clips come in 20-packs, and wire shelving split sleeves come in sets of four. Order a few spares: clips go missing every time shelves move.
Need more shelf levels rather than repairs? Extra shelves are the most common add-on. On boltless units you add a pair of beams and a deck; see particle board shelving decks for deck choices. The boltless shelving parts and accessories page and the boltless shelving parts guide go deeper on rivet shelving parts.
Shelving Brands We Source Parts For
We supply parts for the commercial shelving lines we represent. If yours is one of these, we can usually find a match or a current equivalent:
Brand pages for the most common lines: Tennsco Q-Line, Tennsco Z-Line, Penco Clipper, Equipto V-Grip and RiveTier. If your shelving came boxed from a big-box or online retailer, parts usually come only from that brand’s own customer service. We cannot promise to source those, but we can quote commercial shelving that replaces the run.
Compatibility: Why Brands Rarely Mix
Two units can look the same from across the room and still not share a single part. Hole spacing, hole shape, steel gauge, post profile and clip shape all differ between brands, and often between series of the same brand. A part that almost fits sits loose, tilts the shelf or carries less than the rating assumes.
- Do not mix series on one shelf. A Lyon 8000 clip will not seat properly in a 2000 series post, and the reverse is also true.
- Same size is not the same part. A 36 x 18 shelf from another maker may not land on your clips or beams.
- Load ratings assume matching parts. Mixed parts void the manufacturer’s rating.

We confirm before you order
We do not promise a fit from a description alone. We match from your photos and measurements, confirm the part with the manufacturer where needed, and tell you plainly when no matching part exists.
When the line is discontinued
Brands drop series and change designs, so older shelving sometimes has no direct replacement. Options, from least to most change:
Find a current equivalent
Some manufacturers carry parts that fit older versions of their own line. We ask.
Start a new run beside it
Add new units as a separate run instead of joining them to the old posts.
Replace the run
When parts are gone or the run is worn, new matching units are simpler and safer.
Lead Times and Shipping for Shelving Parts
Parts normally ship from the manufacturer, not from a local shelf, so lead time depends on what that manufacturer has on hand when you order. Be realistic about these points:
We give you a lead time confirmed with the manufacturer at the time of quote rather than a guess. If you need the run usable sooner, ask about temporary options such as moving shelves between bays.
When Replacement Parts Are Not Worth It

Replacing a few parts is the right call when the rest of the shelving is sound and the parts still exist. It stops making sense when:
- Several posts are bent or twisted. A bent post should be replaced, not straightened; its capacity is unknown after it kinks.
- The series is discontinued and you would be mixing brands.
- The parts list adds up to most of a new unit once freight is included.
- You are changing what the shelving holds, and the old units are too shallow, too light-duty or the wrong height.
Unload and tape off a damaged bay until the part is replaced.
A word on used shelving
Used shelving can look like a cheap source of parts, but the savings are usually used up by installation. Parts rarely fit well after they have been taken apart, and the installer’s time to straighten and fit them often costs more than new parts. Reusing shelving you already own can work, but new is sometimes still cheaper once fix-up time is counted. A quick call to our sales team with a few pictures is the fastest way to decide.
