What Is Parts Shelving?
Parts shelving is steel shelving set up to hold many different part numbers, each in its own labeled location, so anyone can find and pick a part quickly. It covers small and mid-size items such as filters, belts, bearings, fittings, hardware, electrical parts and boxed replacement parts. What separates it from general storage shelving is the organization built into it: adjustable shelf levels, dividers, bins, drawers and label holders that turn a plain shelf into dozens of pick locations.
Most systems are built on a sturdy four-post frame, such as four-post metal storage shelving, so a run can grow bay by bay with add-on units.

Quick answer
For most parts rooms, service bays and MRO storerooms, use open or closed steel shelving for boxed parts, rivet or boltless shelving for bulky and heavy items, bin shelving or drawers for small fast-moving parts, and wire or stainless shelving where airflow or washdown matters. Dealership parts departments have their own playbook in our parts department shelving and storage systems guide, and shop owners can follow our step-by-step guide on how to store auto parts.

Types of Parts Shelving to Fit Every Need
The right storage depends on what each part family weighs, how big it is and how often it is picked. Most parts rooms combine two or three of the shelving types below, zoned by part family, instead of using one product everywhere.
Rivet shelving (boltless)

Rivet shelving is known for its strength-to-cost ratio and fast, tool-free assembly: riveted beams drop into keyhole slots in the posts and lock under load, so most units go together with a rubber mallet. It handles heavy cartons, gearboxes, castings and bulk stock on wide spans, and levels can be moved as the part mix changes.
We supply Borroughs Rivet-Span, RiveTier, Lyon rivet rack and other lines. See how to streamline your space with rivet shelving or compare the full boltless shelving range.
Open and closed steel shelving
Four-post steel shelving is the backbone of most parts rooms. Open units with sway braces are fast to load and easy to see into. Closed units add back and side panels so small boxes cannot fall through, labels stay readable on the shelf edge, and each bay can be divided into narrow slots. Shelves adjust on short centers, so one bay can hold tall boxes at the bottom and shallow small-parts levels above.
Our steel shelving page compares open, closed, clip-style and box-edge designs, and clip shelving covers the most budget-friendly closed style.

Bin shelving

Bin shelving pairs a shelving frame with open-hopper plastic shelf bins or fixed steel compartments, so hundreds of small parts each get a slot with a label facing the aisle. It is the go-to choice for fasteners, fittings, electrical parts and anything that is counted rather than lifted. Bins can be pulled to the bench, refilled at receiving and relabeled in seconds when a part number changes.

Modular drawer shelving
For the highest density and the most protection, put drawers inside the shelving. A drawer bank turns one bay into dozens of divided compartments that stay clean, can lock, and hold small parts that would otherwise sit in loose boxes. It is the best fit for precision parts, sensitive electrical components and high-value small items, and the drawers sit between knee and shoulder height where picking is easiest.
Equipto drawers mount in V-Grip shelving; freestanding cabinets are covered on our modular drawer cabinets page.

Wire shelving

Wire shelving suits rooms where cleanliness, light and airflow matter. The open wire deck limits dust build-up, lets sprinkler water and air pass through, and makes visual stock checks easy. Paired with hopper bins it becomes a light-duty small-parts system that can also go mobile on casters. Many units, including Metro wire shelving, are NSF certified for food and medical use.
We supply both mobile and stand-still wire shelving, and with adjustable wire shelving you can set shelf heights to the inch.
Stainless steel shelving
When sanitation and corrosion resistance are non-negotiable, stainless steel shelving is the answer. It suits cleanrooms, medical and lab facilities, food processing and washdown areas, and parts stored near chemicals or moisture. Its non-porous surface is easy to sanitize and stands up to wash-downs and many cleaning chemicals.
Solid stainless shelves keep small parts from falling through; stainless wire keeps air moving. See our stainless steel shelving options.

Parts Shelving Types Compared
Use this table to match each part family to a shelving type before choosing sizes or brands.
| Shelving type | Best for | Strength | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rivet / boltless | Heavy cartons, castings, bulk and long parts | Wide spans, heavy levels, tool-free | Small parts slip through without decking or bins |
| Open steel | Boxed parts, filters, case goods | Fast to load and see into | Small boxes can fall out the back and sides |
| Closed steel | Small boxed parts, divided slots | Back and side panels, clean labeled faces | Less airflow; plan lighting for deep aisles |
| Bin shelving | Fasteners, fittings, electrical parts | Hundreds of labeled pick faces | Bins must match the shelf depth |
| Drawers in shelving | Precision, valuable and tiny parts | Highest density, can lock | Higher cost per bay |
| Wire | Light parts, clean areas, mobile carts | Airflow, visibility, NSF options | Lighter shelf capacities |
| Stainless | Washdown, lab, medical, corrosive areas | Corrosion resistant, easy to sanitize | Cost; overkill in dry parts rooms |
A useful rule: the more part numbers a room has to hold per square foot, the more of it should be bins, drawers and closed shelving; the more heavy or bulky stock it carries, the more it needs rivet shelving with strong decks. Zoning by part family, rather than mixing types bay by bay, keeps the room easy to learn for new staff.
How to Size and Plan Parts Shelving
A parts shelving quote comes down to a few numbers. Gather them before you compare options and the quote will be faster and more accurate.
Working from an inventory export makes the bay count easy: group part numbers into families, decide how many locations each family needs per bay (a closed bay with dividers might hold 20 to 40 small-box slots, a bin bay many more), then divide. Leave growth space as empty levels rather than empty bays. For dealership rooms, our parts room layout and workflow guide walks through counter placement and bin-location flow.
Accessories That Turn Shelving Into a Parts System

The accessories are what make shelving work as parts storage. Borroughs Flexi-Bin units, for example, add sliding shelf dividers so each level splits into labeled compartments for boxed parts.
- Shelf dividers split a level into slots for narrow boxes.
- Label holders carry the bin location on every shelf edge.
- Shelf bins and hopper bins hold loose small parts.
- Drawers add secure small-parts storage inside a bay.
- Back and side panels close open units.
- Decking (particleboard, wire or steel) for rivet shelving.
Accessories should be planned with the shelving, not bought afterward. Divider spacing sets how many locations a bay holds, and label holders only work if the location scheme is decided first. Our bin location and labeling guide explains a simple aisle-bay-level-slot scheme.
Parts Shelving and Workbenches Together
Parts storage works best when the bench is next to it. In service bays and maintenance shops, a workbench with drawers or a parts riser beside the shelving lets technicians stage the parts for a job, check them against the work order and keep small hardware within reach. In parts rooms, a receiving bench near the shelving speeds put-away and relabeling.
Mobile workbenches with lockable drawers and a door cabinet, like this Equipto unit, can roll to the job and back to the parts room.

When you send us a parts shelving layout, include the benches, counters and carts that will sit beside it so aisles and clearances work for both. Browse industrial workbenches for bench styles, tops and drawer options.
The Strategic Advantages of Professional Parts Storage
A purpose-built parts shelving system improves nearly every part of daily operations:
Industry-Leading Brands: Equipto, Borroughs and More
We partner with manufacturers whose shelving is built for decades of daily picking. Offering more than one brand lets us match the right system to the job instead of forcing one product to fit.
Equipto: strength and customization

Equipto has built its reputation on rugged construction and modularity. Its V-Grip system shares double-flanged uprights between bays and adjusts shelves without clips or hardware, and it accepts drawers, dividers, cabinets and bulk shelves in the same frame. That makes it a common choice for automotive and industrial parts rooms that need integrated drawers and dividers.
Compare the line on our Equipto shelving and V-Grip pages, where the official Equipto literature is linked.
Borroughs: versatility in steel
For more than 80 years, Borroughs has designed flexible, durable storage. Its lines range from heavy-duty Box Edge shelving and Rivet-Span to Borroughs Flexi-Bin shelving for high-density small-parts storage. This Brigham City dealership parts room uses Borroughs shelving with adjustable dividers.
